CAVITY PREVENTION 101

May 30 • 1 minute read

The best way to take care of a cavity is to not have one in the first place! Remember these basic tips to help ensure a bright and healthy smile:

Brush: Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste, for two minutes, twice a day. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush, and replace the brush once every 3-4 months. Sooner, if it looks frayed. Use short, back-and forth strokes, about tooth-wide, and be sure to brush the inside, outside, and chewing surface of each tooth.

Floss: Dental floss or other interdental cleaners are designed to be used once a day. Cleaning the plaque from between teeth helps reduce risk of cavities by reducing the amount of acid-producing bacteria present in the mouth.

Eat Balanced Meals: Eat a diet full of calcium-rich foods, such as cheese, milk, yogurt, and calcium-fortified tofu. Protein-rich foods such as lean meat, poultry, fish, and milk are rich sources of phosphorus, which, alongside calcium, help to build and restore tooth enamel.

Drink Water: Water, especially fluoridated water, is the healthiest beverage for your mouth. It rinses the food particles, acids, and sugars away from your teeth. Fluoride also helps by making teeth more resistant to the acid that causes cavities. Who knew such great cavity protection was offered by your kitchen tap water?

Chew Gum: Chewing ADA-approve sugar-free gum for 20 minutes after a meal can help stimulate saliva production. Saliva is your body’s natural defense against cavities, providing fortifying nutrients and disease-fighting substances throughout the mouth.

Visit Your Dentist: Of course, visiting your dentist regularly will help catch problems early, providing you with the best protection against cavities and other dental emergencies.
